  • Earlier this month it was rumored that LG was readying a smartphone with a curved display for release sometime in November. The rumors were true, as LG has now officially unveiled the LG G Flex, which features a 6-inch curved display.

The LG G Flex’s display curves inwards from top-to-bottom. This is the opposite of the way Samsung’s recently announced Galaxy Round smartphone is curved. LG even took a subtle jab at Samsung in its announcement, while at the same time hyping the G Flex to hyperbolic levels.

“The LG G Flex is the best representation yet of how a smartphone should be curved,” said Jong-seok Park, CEO of LG Mobile. “The LG G Flex with its distinctive design, innovative hardware and consumer-centric UX represents the most significant development in the smartphone space since smartphone became part of our regular vocabulary.”

Despite these sorts of claims from Samsung and LG, it is still unclear what type of benefit a curved smartphone brings to consumers. LG claims that its device has “a curvature arc that is optimized for the average face” The company also claims that the curve shortens the distance between a consumer’s mouth and the device’s microphone, raising sound levels by 3dB.

As for the smartphone’s other hardware, the G Flex is basically an LG G2. It has a 2.26GHz quad-core processor, 2GB of RAM, and the rear buttons introduced in the G2. It has a 13MP rear camera and a 2.1MP front camera, as well as a 3,500mAh battery. It should also be pointed out that the phone’s curved display has a resolution of 1280 x720 – a step down from the G2’s full HD 1080 x 1920 display.

The device will debut in Korea sometime in November. The launch of the G Flex in other markets will be announced after its debut.
