  • The fate of eight officers involved in last year’s publicized manhunt of former police officer Christopher Dorner will be decided by LAPD Police Chief Charlie Beck, who has recommended an out of policy ruling for the shooting. The officers fired on a pickup truck falsely believed to have been transporting Dorner. It has been reported that the officers fired 103 rounds with roughly 40 rounds hitting nearby homes. Two female civilians (71-year-old Emma Hernandez and her daughter, 47-year-old Margie Carranza) were inside the vehicle at the time.

According to a report written by Police Chief Beck, “While there were similarities, the truck that approached was a different make and model, different color, had no ski racks and no over-sized tires. There is no evidence to support that they [the two females in the vehicle] were holding an object that could be reasonably perceived to be an imminent deadly threat.”

After being fired from the LAPD, Christopher Dorner went on a killing spree within the span of 10 days that claimed the lives of two police officers as well as the daughter of a LAPD official and her fiancé. In the aftermath of this rampage, Dorner committed suicide in the seclusion of a San Bernardino County cabin.

“This was a tragic cascade of circumstances that led to an inaccurate conclusion by the officers.” Beck said before adding, “I sympathize with the officers, but I have a very high standard for the application of deadly force, and the shooting did not meet that standard.”

Los Angeles Police Commission President Steve Soboroff released a statement expressing his concern for those affected by this tragedy. “Both of these incidents were tragic for all involved, the officers who were injured in the first incident and the innocent women injured in the incident in the City of Torrance. As in all use of force incidents, the department has completed a thorough review and will adopt the lessons learned, both good and bad from these incidents.”
