  • Lady Gaga and Elton John are just two of the the nominees for GLAAD Awards for this year. The 25th annual GLAAD Media Awards ceremonies will take place on April 12th in Los Angeles and on May 3rd in New York City. Gaga, whose real name is Stefani Germanotta, and Elton John were nominated in the Outstanding Musical Artist Award category along with the English electronic music duo Goldfrapp, Tegan and Sara–Canadian indie-rock twin sisters, and the New York alt-rock band Vampire Weekend.

“This year has brought momentous progress for LGBT people and families and our nominees have created images and stories that continue to challenge misconceptions, shatter stereotypes, and change hearts and minds of millions all across the globe,” GLAAD president Sarah Kate Ellis, said during her statement while announcing this year’s nominations.

Other categories for the GLAAD Awards nominations include Best Picture, Best Comedy in a TV Series, Best TV Film or Mini-Series, Best TV Drama Series, Outstanding Documentary and more. Notable nominees include Dallas Buyers Club and Philomena in the Best Picture slot. Modern Family, Glee, Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Orange is the New Black all earned nominations.

Elton John has been a huge advocate of the LGBT community for decades and Lady Gaga has as well ever since she burst on to the music scene. It will certainly be interesting to learn if either of these amazing musical talents takes the award in this GLAAD category.

GLAAD is a non-government run organization that promotes the positive images of LGBT people in the media. Its mission is to “[amplify] the voice of the LGBT community by empowering real people to share their stories, holding the media accountable for the words and images they present, and helping grassroots organizations communicate effectively.”

Lady Gaga, Elton John and the aforementioned GLAAD nominees all fit perfectly within this mission statement. Congratulations to all of the nominees.
