  • Lacey Spears has been found guilty of murder in the 2014 death of her five-year-old son Garnett. She poisoned the little boy to death with salt.

According to a report from People magazine, a White Plains, New York jury deliberated for two and a half days before reaching their verdict.

Lacey Spears was found guilty of second-degree depraved murder.

Prosecutors say Lacey Spears enjoyed the “attention and sympathy” she received via social media, as she chronicled her little boy’s mysterious illness at length.

“Although her son was incredibly special, he was not sick–he was not sick until his mother made him sick,” prosecutor Doreen Lloyd said in her opening statement.

“Lacey Spears is a calculating child killer who researched, planned and executed the intentional poisoning of her son, Garnett Spears, with salt,” she added. “She is no longer the mother of Garnett Spears because she murdered him.”

Lacey Spears maintained she was innocent despite the stacked evidence against her. In addition to some of that evidence, which included two feeding bags that tested positive for sodium and an open container of sea salt found in her house, Spears’s online history showed she had researched the dangers of sodium.

Her defense attorney, Stephen Riebling, urged jurors to understand that no one ever saw Lacey Spears poison her son, and that she had no reason at all to do so.

“There is no evidence in this case that legitimately answers the question ‘Why?’ ” he said during his opening remarks.

“The motive is bizarre, the motive is scary, but it exists,” Assistant District Attorney Patricia Murphy said in closing arguments Thursday. “She apparently craved the attention of her family, her friends, her co-workers and most particularly the medical profession.”

Lacey Spears reportedly showed little to no emotion when the verdict was read on Monday. She was led away shortly thereafter.

April 8th is the date of sentencing for Lacey Spears. What do you think she will receive for a sentence in the murder of her five-year-old son?
