  • Three weeks ago, Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard welcomed their second child, Delta Bell Shepard. Bell gave birth to Delta via C-Section, and Shepard was not prepared for it. In the January 15 episode of The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Shepard recounted Bell’s 33-hour long labor as well as the operation that followed. When asked about whether Bell’s pregnancy was easier the second time around, Shepard responded, “It was not, Ellen. Kristen, god bless her, was in labor for 33 hours. It was intense.”

According to Shepard, Bell received an epidural during the 14th hour of her labor. “She got an epidural at like hour 14… and I think dads need something. I deserved something. Because I was along for the ride. It’s still a car crash and I’m in the passenger seat. I’m playing Katy Perry, and I’m breathing, and I’m rubbing her back, and I have fatigue, and I think, ‘I need something for this. Help me.’” However, at the last minute, it was decided that the baby had to be delivered via C-Section. Shepard admitted that he was not prepared for what he would see during the procedure.

Shepard joked, “So, there’s a sheet and then they go, ‘The baby’s here!’ And then you peak around the sheet and they’re lifting out the baby, but then you notice your wife is completely disassembled. I can see inside of her. I was like, ‘It’s a girl! Your liver’s out, I think. And then those are definitely your intestines.’”

During the interview, Shepard also talked about how he and Bell came up with the name for their second child. “Our first daughter’s name is Lincoln, which is very masculine,” he recalled. “So, a friend of mine teasingly texted me, ‘Oh, great, what’s this [next name] going to be? Navy SEAL? Delta Force? Green Beret?’ And I was reading this text out loud to Kristen. I’m like, ‘This is so funny. Steve said, ‘What if we named her Delta Force?’ And [Bell] was like, ‘Delta! Delta Bell Shepard! That’s it!’ And that’s it.”
