  • Sex and The City actress Kim Cattrall recently spoke out against plans to sell Sefton Park Meadows. The actress was born in Liverpoolm and according to her, she spent a great part of that childhood in the aforementioned park. Cattrall says that the planned development of the park would “encroach on people’s land”. Liverpool Mayor Joe Anderson has responded to the actress and called her comments “ill-informed”. He added, “It’s all very well for a Hollywood superstar to shout from the sidelines, but what does she really know of the issues that Liverpool faces?”

Cattrall was at Liverpool to pick up an International Arts Icon award at the Collective Honours event. In an interview with the Liverpool Echo, the actress talked at length about Sefton Park. “It’s so beautiful and it gives people a place to contemplate and play and walk and we need that barrier between the houses and the park. So I’m very disappointed that the mayor has made the decisions that he has.”

Anderson responded to Cattrall and said, “She may have played in Sefton Park when she briefly lived in the city as a girl, but she left. I am still here and having to deal with massive and savage Tory government cuts to our budget while devising ways to grow and sustain the city and protect its most vulnerable citizens.” Anderson added, “We’re selling off 11 acres. It’s adjacent to, but not in, the 300 acres of Sefton Park in which people, as she suggests, can walk, play and contemplate.”

According to Anderson, the 15 villas that will be put up around the 11 acres of land will help generate revenue and the money will be used to invest in Liverpool’s infrastructure including the city’s parks.

Cattrall recently posted a picture of herself at the park beside a protest sign with the phrase, “Meadows are not for sale”.
