  • This is turning out to be the year of the sci-fi film with all sorts of films set to be released in the coming months. Jupiter Ascending is one of them, and perhaps one of the most anticipated, partly due to its creators.

Jupiter Ascending had released its initial trailer three months ago, and just unveiled the latest one yesterday. The film is directed by the Lana Wachowski and Andy Wachowski, formerly Laurence Wachowski.

It is sure to be a pleasing film visually to say the least, and the sibling duo was also behind the camera for groundbreaking, and visually stunning films such as The Matrix trilogy and Cloud Atlas. It is set in the future, and features the intriguing tagline of “expand your universe.”

The film is said to blend genres, and reference earlier films of its kind. Lana Wachowski described the film in an interesting way when saying “It’s a science-fiction space opera. It has a lot of things from a lot of genres that we love. It’s got a lot of original action, it’s got a lot of romance.”

Jupiter Ascending stars Mila Kunis and Channing Tatum in a bit of an odd pairing for a film that hopes to be a blockbuster hit. The film will also feature Douglas Booth, Eddie Redmayne, and Sean Bean.

Kunis’ character Jupiter Jones poses a threat to the reign of the Queen of the Universe thanks to her perfect genetic makeup. She is a Ukrainian immigrant whose dull daily grind is interrupted in spectacular fashion by Channing Tatum’s Caine, an alien assassin sent to kill Jupiter before she can fulfill her destiny.

However, things are altered a bit when he becomes her protector instead. The film could divide audiences to a degree since it seems to share plot similarities with fairy tales, and could seem too similar to other films. At the same time, Jupiter Ascending could turn out to be a huge film, and simply the title, and its stunning visuals, could be enough to draw in the viewers.

The film will be shown in multiple formats including 2D, 3D, and even IMAX. It opens in theaters on July 25, 2014. Will this be another one of their hits like The Matrix, or a flop like Speed Racer?
