  • Jodi Arias, who is facing a second penalty phase trial in September, won’t be allowed to see a certain member of her defense team until the trial starts.

Mitigation specialist Maria De La Rosa has been banned from the Arizona jail where Arias awaits her fate because she reportedly took a drawing done by Arias from the premises. According to the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office, no one is allowed to deliver things for Arias while she is in custody, and the drawing is considered contraband. The legal team says the ban is uncalled for and claim De La Rosa only had legal documents in her possession.

Arias was convicted last May of the 2008 murder of her boyfriend, Travis Alexander. The trial drew quite a bit of attention and garnered a TV movie after cameras in the courtroom showed Arias in a state of misery at the loss of her lover. However, inconsistencies in her story soon brought up questions; after first denying having anything to do with Alexander’s death, Arias admitted she killed him in what she called self defense. A camera found at the crime scene still had images of the couple engaging in sexual acts moments before he was killed and even showed his dead body in the shower. Alexander was found stabbed 30 times and shot in the head, and his throat was slit.

The jury couldn’t come to a conclusion regarding a penalty in that trial, so a new jury will have to decide whether Arias will get the death penalty. If they can’t come to a decision, the judge could give her life without the possibility of parole or life with the chance of parole after 25 years.
