  • Jared Leto might do a lot of things, but one he vows he’ll never do again is lose weight for a role.

The actor recently shed upwards of 30 pounds for his role as an AIDS-infected, drug-addicted transvestite in the film Dallas Buyers Club, opposite Matthew McConaughey and Jennifer Garner.

Losing 30 pounds is difficult for just about anyone, but when you don’t need to lose it in the first place, and when you have to do it in a short amount of time, like Leto, doing so can be extremely hard and debilitating, not to mention unhealthy.

Leto revealed that losing the weight began to “take its toll,” but that he doesn’t regret doing so, as it was vital to the role.

The 30 Seconds to Mars singer was rewarded for his efforts, as he received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor.

Check out Leto’s uncomfortable encounter with a fan who disapproved of the actor playing the role, here:

This isn’t the first time Leto experienced a major body transformation for a movie role. Back in 2007, Leto gained 67 pounds to play Mark Chapman, the man who shot Beatles member John Lennon on December 8, 1980, in the biopic Chapter 27.

Along with a drastic change in appearance, the actor also experienced a variety of health problems because of the weight gain.

“Really, it’s a stupid thing to do,” Leto stated in an interview. “I got gout, and my cholesterol went up so fast in such a short time that my doctors wanted to put me on Lipitor, which is for much, much older people. Again, though, a fascinating journey.”

This journey is perhaps what intrigued Leto to take on the role of the man who murdered one of the world’s best musicians.

“I had some reservations because I love everything John Lennon ever did,” he said. “But in the end I wanted to explore a specimen embodying the total failure of humanity, just walk down this brutal path again.”
