Titanic fans will be excited to find that James Cameron is planning to release a 3D film experience of his Mariana Trench adventures under National Geographic supervision. He is shooting for a release this year. The film will be featured on the National Geographic channel.

Cameron explains:

“We’re shooting the whole expedition as a 3D film,”

“We spent a fair bit of the development budget of the sub figuring out how we would be lighting it and how we would do 3D photography at full ocean depth. We did tackle a lot of challenges but, always, the thinking was this expedition is going to get paid for by a film.”

This isn’t the first time Cameron has undertaken a documentary featuring undersea footage. In 2003 he released a film titled, “Ghosts of the Abyss” showcasing seabed footage of the final resting place of the real Titanic. It is apparent Cameron has affinity for the underwater realm, how else could we explain his recent trench dive and the 1989 film “The Abyss”. This new 3D offering has to be a real feather in his cap, how many other directors can claim they went to the lengths he went to just to get original footage?
