  • Ever since J. K. Rowling finished the Harry Potter series, fans have been wondering what her next project would be. Rowling has put those speculations to rest today, with the announcement of her next book, “The Casual Vacancy”.

This will be Rowling’s first adult novel, and her first new novel since Deathly Hallows was released in 2007. It is expected to hit bookshelves on September 27. The 480-page novel will also be available as an e-book and audio download.

The publisher, Brown, Little, released the synopsis on the Wall Street Journal

When Barry Fairweather dies unexpectedly in his early forties, the little town of Pagford is left in shock.

Pagford is, seemingly, an English idyll, with a cobbled market square and an ancient abbey, but what lies behind the pretty façade is a town at war.

Rich at war with poor, teenagers at war with their parents, wives at war with their husbands, teachers at war with their pupils…Pagford is not what it first seems.

And the empty seat left by Barry on the parish council soon becomes the catalyst for the biggest war the town has yet seen. Who will triumph in an election fraught with passion, duplicity and unexpected revelations?

Blackly comic, thought-provoking and constantly surprising, The Casual Vacancy is J.K. Rowling’s first novel for adults.

I’m not sure, but I think there will be war.

Whether or not the new book will be as big a Harry Potter remains to be seen, but she will surely draw in a few readers based on the 450 million copies she sold of the famous series. The films made $7.7 billion worldwide, so I’d say she’s starting with a pretty good fan base.

Surprisingly, J. K. Rowling has a real Twitter account (Maybe. Who knows? Whoever it is spends most of her tweets talking about how the account is authentic). She has tweeted all of eleven times in the past 3 years. During that time she has mostly talks about how she is real and busy writing ‘The Casual Vacancy’.

I am told that people have been twittering on my behalf, so I thought a brief visit was in order just to prevent any more confusion!(image) 938 days ago via web ·  Reply ·  Retweet ·  Favorite · powered by @socialditto

This is the real me, but you won’t be hearing from me often I’m afraid, as pen and paper are STILL my priority at the moment.(image) 413 days ago via web ·  Reply ·  Retweet ·  Favorite · powered by @socialditto

As you may have heard, I have a new book out later this year. Very different to Harry, although I’ve enjoyed writing it every bit as much.(image) 48 days ago via web ·  Reply ·  Retweet ·  Favorite · powered by @socialditto
