  • Imagine Dragons and Kendrick Lamar gained many fans with their performance at this year’s Grammy awards show. But for months, Imagine Dragons overflowed the radio airwaves with their hit song “Radioactive.”

Appearing in numerous ads, movie trailers, and various hit TV shows helped solidify the success of “Radioactive.” Therefore, it’s not surprising that “Radioactive” nears a major record: song on Billboard’s Hot 100 for the longest run.

For 76 consecutive weeks, “Radioactive” maintained a spot on the Billboard charts. It now ties the record for longest time a single graced the Billboard’s Hot 100. This record was set in 2008-09 by Jason Mraz with his song “I’m Yours.” This week “Radioactive” ranks at the No.23 spot on the Hot 100, a slight decrease from its previous No.13 ranking. Because of song’s current spot on the chart, it’s likely to break the record.

“Radioactive,” like “I’m Yours,” never reached the top spot on the Hot 100; “Radioactive” peaked at the No.3 spot.

Imagine Dragons credited the songs versatility for its chart longevity. In an interview with Billboard the band said this about “Radioactive:”

There is something that is so sexy about this song and there is so much depth to it. It’s completely different from anything else on the radio right now. Your first impression is that it’s a rock song on an alternative station. Then, it connects with the audience and won’t go away. Before you know it, it’s showing up in research on pop and adult stations … Radioactive’ is a little alternative, a little pop, a little dubstep … the best of three big genres. A perfect storm, so to speak.

Besides Imagine Dragons, AWOLNATION creeps closer to beating Mraz’s record as well. Their song “Sail” just passed its 75th week on the Hot 100.

Imagine Dragons’ “Radioactive” currently has 6.6 million downloads. Welcome to the new age indeed.
