  • Hope Solo may have saved the day and helped her team clinch the gold last night when they battled Japan, but she doesn’t think it was the best save she’s ever made.

The save came after team captain Christie Rampone had the ball stolen from her by Mana Iwabuchi, who came breathlessly close to scoring near the end of the game. Solo made a grab that secured her team the gold, but upon reflection, she says it wasn’t anything special.

“It probably wasn’t my best save, but when you look at it — it’s in the final minute of the Olympics. … I guess it’s a big save,” Solo said. “It’s what I’ve trained for. So it’s a little routine.”

Solo is known among her teammates to be outspoken, even going so far as to admit that the team was still a little drunk during their post-game interview on “Today” four years ago, but the other ladies on the U.S. team aren’t going to let her downplay her talents.

“She does a lot of talking, but that’s her personality, and that’s who she is,” U.S. midfielder Megan Rapinoe said. “But we’re glad to have her in our goal. She’s the best keeper in the world, and that’s not even an argument right now. Just brilliant — from point-blank, from good finishers — I don’t know how she does it. But thank God it was her back there and nobody else.”
