  • Actress Gwyneth Paltrow and Coldplay frontman Chris Martin announced their separation Tuesday, signaling the end of the couples 11-year marriage.

The couple delivered the news in a post entitled “Conscious Uncoupling” on Paltrow’s lifestyle-focused website, Goop.com. The stars said they have made the decision to “remain separate.”

“We have been working hard for well over a year, some of it together, some of it separated, to see what might have been possible between us, and we have come to the conclusion that while we love each other very much we will remain separate,” Paltrow and Martin wrote.

Paltrow, 41, and Martin, 37, moved back to Los Angeles recently after spending several years in London. The couple has two children, Apple, nine, and Moses, who is seven, and appealed for privacy during their breakup.

“We have always conducted our relationship privately, and we hope that as we consciously uncouple and coparent, we will be able to continue in the same manner,” the message concluded.

The statement, signed “Love, Gwyneth & Chris,” was accompanied by an old photo of the couple, smiling as they lounged on grass.

Goop.com crashed for several hours soon after the statement went online, after the site was overwhelmed with visitors.

Paltrow and Martin reportedly met backstage at a Coldplay concert in late 2002, after the singer asked an assistant to arrange a meeting with the actress.

The couple tied the knot in a secret ceremony in California the following year, soon after announcing they were expecting their first child together.

Paltrow, whose previous boyfriends include Brad Pitt and Ben Affleck, co-stars in the blockbuster Iron Man films and won an Academy Award for Best Actress for her role in Shakespeare in Love in 1999.

British singer Martin founded Coldplay with a university friend in 1996 and received huge acclaim with their first two albums, Parachutes and A Rush of Blood to the Head. The band’s sixth album is due out in May.

Their marriage has been the subject of tabloid speculation for years. Reports as recently as February indicating that Martin was unhappy at the couple’s move to Los Angeles late last year.
