Popular 1950s film actress Grace Kelly, who became the Princess of Monaco, will have an exhibit dedicated to her life open in the Fall. The exhibit, “Grace Kelly: Beyond the Icon,” will open at the Michener Art Museum in Doylestown, Pennsylvania on October 28. The museum is located about thirty miles outside of Kelly’s hometown of Philadelphia.

A news conference detailing the exhibit was held on Thursday at the Hotel Monaco in Philadelphia. On display will be Princess Grace’s personal artifacts such as letters, photographs, home movies, and film clips; as well, Kelly’s Oscar for her role in “The Country Girl,” which she won for Best Actress at the 1955 Academy Awards, will also be shown. Some of Kelly’s fashions will be there as well, including the two pieces she made most famous: her Yves Saint Laurent “Mondrian” dress, and her Hermes “Kelly” handbag. (The Hermes bag was named for the Princess after she carried one throughout her first pregnancy in 1956.) While Grace Kelly will always be known as one of America’s all-time favorite actresses, she was incredibly well known for her sense of style, making it one of the things she is, sometimes, most famous for.

Kelly’s son, Prince Albert II of Monaco, addressed the upcoming exhibit by stating, “[My mother] was indeed a talented woman who became an international fashion icon, but that is just the surface of her life.” He then went on to say, “Those of us who were fortunate enough to know my mother, her family and friends, knew her to be a genuine, warm and loving woman – a woman who always put her family first. I hope that by experiencing this exhibition you will be able to get a glimpse of the real Grace Kelly, the woman behind the icon, my mother.”

Kelly starred in several films in the 1950s, including Alfred Hitchcock’s “Dial M For Murder,” and “Rear Window.” In 1956, Kelly married Prince Rainier of Monaco; she went on to have three children and never returned to acting. Grace Kelly was killed tragically in 1982, in a car accident involving her 17-year-old daughter, Princess Stephanie; she was 52.

The exhibit opening in the U.S. will not make any other stops in the country, but will go overseas after its Michener closing on January 26, 2014. Tickets are limited so buying them in advance is suggested.
