  • At the end of November, Google debuted a new Image Search feature that seemed to suggest the company is trying to turn image search into more of a Pinterest-like offering. You can star and bookmark images from the search from your mobile browser and keep them organized by folders.

On Monday, Google announced this functionality is now available on desktop.

“For example, if your yard is in need of some spring re-planting, just go to your desktop, search for an image and tap the star to save your potential new flowers, bushes, or even swimming pools,” says Google software engineer Mark Colbert. “When you’re at the store ready to start buying, you’ll be able to pull up your saved images on your phone and start building your perfect yard. You can also tag your saves to keep them organized.”

“We’re aiming to make what you search for and save more useful, so start saving to Google and let us know what you think about today’s update,” Colbert adds.

Pinterest considers itself a search service, so it stands to reason that there is an opportunity for Google to get in on some of those Pinterest use cases.
