  • Gisele, Gisele, Gisele, you’re not making the best decision for your child’s safety. At least that’s what some people might say after seeing the 33-year old supermodel take her daughter Vivian Lake on an ATV ride with no helmet protection.

It seems that mother and daughter were taking a casual cruise somewhere in Costa Rica, and for some reason Bundchen decided a helmet wasn’t important for little Vivian to wear. And according to TMZ, it’s against the law to ride an ATV without a helmet if you’re riding in a public area, so it’s possible Bundchen could be in legal trouble, unless of course she was riding on private property.

But whether she was breaking the law or not, really isn’t the point, some will undoubtedly say, because all it takes is one wrong turn and that’s it, the consequences could be tragic.

According to a study by Trauma Services at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, children need helmets for one reason: Their bones are way too fragile to absorb the impact of a crash, and although the study focuses more on teens who ride ATVs, the logic still applies to Bundchen and her child, probably even more so.

And remember, all of this comes on the heels of a controversial photo she posted of getting a beauty treatment while breastfeeding. Some thought the photo was in poor taste and questioned Bundchen’s priorities.

“Although ATVs have surged in popularity over the past several years, they pose significant dangers for children 16 and under who simply do not have the physical strength, cognitive skills, maturity or judgement to safely operate ATVs,” said Rebeccah L. Brown, lead study author. “These are hefty motorized vehicles that weigh up to 600 pounds and are capable of reaching speeds of up to 85 milers per hour.”

With the photo of Bundchen and her daughter still being relatively new, there’s a good chance the backlash will come raining down in heavier proportions in the days to come, and she’ll likely get it from all over–children protection groups, parents and people who just like to use a little common sense when raising their children.
