  • Professional boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. has been receiving multi-million dollar checks for over 10 years. On Wednesday, Forbes reported that he made $105 million for 72 minutes in the boxing ring, which makes him the highest paying athlete of 2014. It is the second time Mayweather had the top spot in three years. This goes to show that his nickname, “Money,” suits him well.

Mayweather shares the list with soccer superstar Cristiano Ronaldo on the second spot, and LeBron James on the third. Others on the list include Lionel Messi, Kobe Bryant, Rodger Federer, Tiger Woods, Rafael Nadal, and Matt Ryan.

Forbes also reported that Mayweather earned at least $25 million for each of his fights since 2007. Mayweather has been a professional boxer since 1996, and has accumulated nearly $400 million since then.

My Name Is Floyd “Money” Mayweather

Mayweather’s top spot can be accredited to his most lucrative fights, which were with Marcos Maidana and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. According to Darren Rovell of ESPN, boxing stars today earn much more than boxing stars then. “Forbes says Floyd Mayweather is the top earning athlete, making $105M over last year. That’s up 150% from Tyson’s #1 pay in 1989,” he tweeted.

Reports also indicate that Mayweather is the first athlete to go beyond the $100 million mark, besides Tiger Woods.

Mayweather has a good chance of maintaining the top spot as the highest paid athlete next year. That is, if he fights two times next year as expected. However, his next fights will not be under Golden Boy Promotions. Instead, they will be under Mayweather Promotions. “Mayweather Promotions will continue to promote Floyd’s fights and Floyd will continue to put on the biggest fights in boxing,” said Leonard Ellerbe, Mayweather Promotions’ Chief Executive.

Since Mayweather is in control of his fights, this could mean more money for the athlete.
