Emma Watson: From Harry Potter to the United Nations

  • Emma Watson has been named a U.N. goodwill ambassador for gender equality. The Harry Potter star will serve as an advocate for the U.N. Women’s HeForShe campaign that prompts both boys and men to stand up for the inequalities countless girls and women are facing all around the world. Watson isn’t the first Hollywood celebrity to be named a goodwill ambassador. Angelina Jolie served as one for the refuge agency UNHCR before she was renamed as a Special Envoy.

U.N. Women broke the exciting news on their website but it crashed shortly thereafter. Might that be due to the popularity of this young actress?

Emma Watson was honored and excited when she confirmed word of her appointment as a U.N. ambassador via social media.

Shortly after this tweet she posted another.

Of course Emma Watson’s initial and thus far biggest claim to fame is her role as Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter series of films. She has also starred in The Perks of Being A Wallflower and Noah.

Watson is far more than a pretty and talented face, however. She is a Brown University graduate–no small feat for any college student, but even more admirable for one who is an actress, too–with a degree in English literature.

Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka is the Under-Secretary-General and Executive Director for U.N. Women. She had the following to say about Emma Watson coming on board as a United Nations goodwill ambassador.

“We are thrilled and honored to work with Emma, whom we believe embodies the values of UN Women,” she said. “The engagement of young people is critical for the advancement of gender equality in the 21st century, and I am convinced that Emma’s intellect and passion will enable UN Women’s messages to reach the hearts and minds of young people globally.”

This has got to be a huge honor for Emma Watson. She will no doubt do her country proud.
