  • Ellen DeGeneres is set to join forces with HGTV. Starting in 2015 she will host a design competition called Ellen’s Design Challenge. The six-episode run marks the first foray of DeGeneres’s production company’s–A Very Good Production–into cable TV.

The new show will feature six competitors delving into various design challenges–all involving furniture. Each contestant will sketch, design, and build furniture based on each challenge’s specifications within 24 hours of being issued the challenge.

The last of the six contestants standing will win a cash prize, although exactly how much that prize will be hasn’t yet been formally announced.

“I’m so excited about this show because I love finding really special pieces of furniture,” Ellen DeGeneres said. “One time I found a beautiful one-of-a-kind armoire that spoke to me in a way I’d never experienced. It turned out there was a drifter living inside of it, but that’s a story for another time.”

Ellen’s passion for furniture and house design will be highlighted in the show as well.

“There has been a lot of dancing in our halls since we shared that we will be collaborating with Ellen,” HGTV and DIY Network president Kathleen Finch said. “When she talked to us about her love of buying and renovating homes, her personal passion for the creative process of furniture design emerged as something that she wanted to explore more. Since HGTV is the ultimate forum in this space, and since no other network can deliver an audience who is as enthusiastic as she is about the creative process, we just had to make it happen.”

If you’re an HGTV fan as well as a fan of Ellen DeGeneres, this news is likely the announcement of the best of both worlds coming together. You can enjoy your home design–or in this case furniture design–while staying up to date on what your favorite daytime TV funny lady is doing.

Will this latest project of Ellen DeGeneres’s turn to gold the way so many of her other projects have?
