Dick Cheney: Sarah Palin Was McCain’s “Mistake”

  • Dick Cheney is everywhere lately; talking about his health problems, his take on President Obama, and his thoughts on whether Sarah Palin was the right choice for John McCain. Where the latter is concerned, a firm and resounding “no” sums up his ideas, and he wants Mitt Romney to steer clear of making the same mistake.

As someone who’s helped former Republican presidential candidates seek out the perfect V.P., Cheney is as qualified as anyone to give Romney advice on the matter, and he hopes Romney will listen. He says that McCain’s decision to scoop up Palin as a running mate was perhaps not well thought out.

“That one, I don’t think, was well handled. The test to get on that small list has to be, ‘Is this person capable of being president of the United States?” he said. “That’s usually a very, very short list.”

Cheney thinks not. And it seems he’s in agreement with a lot of Democrats when it comes to why she was chosen.

“I like Governor Palin. I’ve met her. I know her. She’s….an attractive candidate,” Cheney said. “But based on her background, she’d only been governor for, what, two years. I don’t think she passed that test…of being ready to take over. And I think that was a mistake.”
