  • This is a sad and yet hilarious demonstration of what happens when someone fails to realize that it is indeed possible to over-share on social media. So many people don’t understand that not every bit of information that comes down the pipe must then be immediately shared via Facebook.

Unfortunately Dana Snay is one of those people. Or at least she was, but blowing her father’s chance of claiming $80,000 in a lawsuit settlement might make her type more carefully in the future.

    What happened?

The Miami Herald reports that Patrick Snay, 69, was the headmaster at Gulliver Preparatory School in Miami, Florida. When Snay did not have his contract renewed in 2010, he sued his former employers for age discrimination. In 2011, he won an $80,000 settlement.

However, there were certain conditions in place that allowed Snay to walk away with the money. The largest condition being the confidential nature of the settlement.

A.K.A. “don’t tell anyone about it!”

It’s not uncommon for persons who receive large settlements in huge lawsuits to reveal the nature of the outcome to close and trusted friends and family members. At the same time, it’s usually understood that these individuals will not take for granted the consequences of blowing the lid off of a major and confidential court ruling.

Unfortunately for Snay, his daughter Dana…just not one of those people.

The young woman attended Gulliver at some point, but is currently at Boston College. The former student had decided to let everyone in her Facebook circle know that her parents “won the case”r. She wrote, “Gulliver is now officially paying for my vacation to Europe this summer. SUCK IT.”

The young woman had 1,200 followers at the time of the boast and (surprise, surprise) many of them actually attend Gulliver. Naturally lips flapped around campus and before the Snays knew it, the college was appealing the ruling. The Third District Court of Appeals subsequently threw out the settlement.

It now appears that Gulliver will not be paying for Dana Snay’s trip to Europe.

Here is a lesson for all you kids whose parents suddenly get cash from one source or another: DON’T TELL THE INTERNET; THE INTERNET IS NOT THE PLACE FOR SECRETS!
