However, the ecosystem’s permissiveness has changed dramatically in recent months. In response to mounting complaints from film studios, copyright holders, and deceived viewers, YouTube initiated a sweeping crackdown. Hundreds of fake trailer channels have been demonetized, with ad revenue suspended and, in some cases, channels taken offline altogether. The legal and ethical issues run deep. YouTube’s crackdown has heightened the conversation around digital integrity and fair use. The company cited three core violations for demonetization: misuse of copyrighted materials, misleading metadata and thumbnails, and monetization of deceptive or recycled content. The move signals a more aggressive stance not just against copyright infringement, but also against the erosion of viewer trust and the proliferation of viral misinformation.

While some creators argue that their work amounts to harmless entertainment or transformative fan art, others acknowledge the slippery slope toward deception and attention-driven profiteering.
