  • With Comic-Con and all things comic book-related blowing up the web this week, I figured I’d take a look at some of the worst comic art ever put to the page. Unfortunately for one man, they are all from his pen. Seriously, Rob Liefeld has made a hell of a career out of being a mediocre artist and completely ignorant of human anatomy, which, as any artist will tell you, is kind of important to the trade.

As a student of the arts, I’ve only taken one comics class and do not consider myself to be an expert on it by any means. But all you have to do is look closely at the figures Liefeld draws to see why a lot of people get snarky when it comes to his work. So sit back, relax, and have a good laugh at some of the funniest, most cringe-inducing comic art ever produced. Tip o’ the hat to SundownMotel on Progressive Boink for the images.

It’s well known within the comic world that Liefeld hates drawing feet. He uses all sorts of layout tricks to avoid having to draw them, and when he absolutely doesn’t have a choice and is forced to put them in, they come out waaaaaay too small and are just generally painful to look at. There are lots of things wrong with this cover, but that Spiderman may well be the worst I’ve ever seen. I can’t believe that even made it onto the front of the book.

Forget the nonsensical floating face and arm. Forget the extreme lack of proportion, the terrible layout choice, the fact that he again managed to avoid drawing feet. What I’m curious about is why everyone has the same facial expression in his drawings. Two on the same cover! Good job, Rob.

I just don’t have any words for this one.

What are these characters standing on that puts them at different levels? What’s wrong with that woman’s spine? For Thor’s sake, WHERE ARE THE FEET?

I honestly don’t think Liefeld has ever picked up an anatomy book in his entire life. Are those muscles/tendons or does he randomly have ropes that are the same color as his suit criss-crossing his body? How many abs can one character have?
