  • Chobani Greek Yogurt is being pulled from shelves this week after customers complained about “bloating” in the cups and odd tastes. The company says they believe as little as 5% of the product was affected by a type of mold that occurs in dairy products.

The company is stressing that the action is completely voluntary on their part and is not technically a recall, but rather a move to appease customers who complained about strange tastes and textures. The affected product has the code 16-012 on the package and expiration dates of Sept. 11 to Oct. 7.

Many consumers have taken to social media sites to share stories about the yogurt, with several people complaining of stomach upset and some saying that certain flavors were “lumpy“.

The news comes just a matter of days after the company issued a statement saying they would be removing hemp seeds from their Blueberry Power Flip yogurt after complaints from the U.S. Air Force stating they couldn’t allow the product in their mess hall. A portion of their policy was released, stating, “Studies have shown that products made with hemp seed and hemp seed oil may contain varying levels of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), an active ingredient of marijuana which is detectable under the Air Force Drug Testing Program. In order to ensure military readiness, the ingestion of products containing or products derived from hemp seed or hemp seed oil is prohibited. Failure to comply with the mandatory provisions of this paragraph by military personnel is a violation of Article 92, UCMJ.”

Chobani is currently working with retailers to pull the product off shelves, but they say customers who already have affected yogurt should email [email protected] to get replacements.
