Nearly a quarter (23%) of consumers plan to shop online for Valentine’s Day gifts, with nine percent reporting they will spend more money online for gifts compared to last year, according to a new survey by eBillme and Javelin Strategy & Research.

Javelin surveyed 1,200 consumers to measure projected online spending for the quarter and found consumers plan to spend an average of $236 online which is in line with spending levels from Q1 2009.

Cost Of Data Breaches Continues To Climb

Data breach incidents cost U.S. companies $204 per compromised customer record in 2009, compared to $202 in 2008, according to a new study from the Ponemon Institute and security firm PGP.

Even with an overall drop in the number of reported breaches (498 in 2009 vs. 657 in 2008), the average total per-incident costs in 2009 were $6.75 million compared to an average of $6.65 million in 2008.

The Food and Drug Administration is warning consumers about an unsafe, counterfeit version of the weight-loss drug Alli sold online.

FDA lab test found the counterfeit Alli has a different active ingredient, a stimulant found in prescription weight-loss drug. People using the fake Alli may be taking three times the usual daily dose of the stimulant if they are following the dosing directions for Alli.

OS Software Revenue Up 35%

U.S. retail operating systems boxed software revenue increased 35 percent in 2009, but it was not enough to lift non-games software into positive territory, according to new research from The NPD Group.

Total retail non-games software revenue fell 7 percent in 2009 to $2.4 billion.  That is an improvement over the 10 percent decrease in 2008. Unit volume for 2009 dropped 6 percent and average selling price dipped 2 percent.
