Candace Cameron Bure Defines Submission

  • Candace Cameron Bure is still the fresh-faced, beautiful woman fans were thrilled with watching in her younger days as the adorable DJ Tanner in the hit TV show Full House. She’s a grown woman now–a wife to former NHL player Valeri Bure, and mom to their three children. And she is–as she was then–a devout Christian. It’s that Christianity she is defending of late, as she promotes her new book Balancing It All: My Story of Juggling Priorities and Purpose.

During a recent interview, Bure was asked to explain her references in her book to being submissive in her relationship with her husband.

“The definition I’m using with the word ‘submissive’ is the biblical definition of that. So, it is meekness, it is not weakness. It is strength under control, it is bridled strength.”

This is sometimes a very difficult concept for many women–and some men, too–to swallow these days.

“It is very difficult to have two heads of authority,” Candace said. “It doesn’t work in military, it doesn’t work – I mean, you have one president, you know what I’m saying?”

There is no doubt when listening to Candace Cameron Bure that she is 100% secure in her position as a submissive wife, and her definition of the term and how it plays itself out in her marriage definitely softens the sound of the rather foreboding term.

“Listen, I love that my man is a leader,” she said. “I want him to lead and be the head of our family and those major decisions do fall on him. It doesn’t mean I don’t voice my opinion and it doesn’t mean I don’t have an opinion – I absolutely do but it is very difficult to have two heads of authority. It doesn’t work…And when you’re competing with two heads that can pose a lot of problems or issues. So within my marriage we are equal in our importance…But we are different in our performances in our marriage.”

This is simply what life is all about for the former Full House star. The sister of evangelist Kirk Cameron, living her life as a devout Christian has been engrained in her very being since she was a young girl. As she wrote in a recent Twitter post, she really had no idea that the notion of submitting to one’s husband was a relatively foreign concept.

As with everything Bure adheres to in her life, being submissive to her husband comes directly from the Bible, in the 1st Book of Peter, Chapter 3, Verse 1.

“In the same way, you wives, be submissive to your own husbands so that even if any of them are disobedient to the word, they may be won without a word by the behavior of their wives.”

Regardless of what anyone else feels about the notion of submissive wives, it has very clearly worked for Candace Cameron Bure. And that’s not to say she and her husband haven’t had their ups and downs like anyone else. She’s been quite vocal about that in the past, too. Quite simply, what they do works for them. And no one should bat an eyelash at how they live their lives.
