  • On November 5, Call of Duty: Ghosts will hit store shelves in North America – but only for current-generation consoles. The release of the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One will still be weeks away at that point. The last thing Activision wants is for gamers to hold off their purchases for console launch, so the publisher has teamed with console manufacturers to offer $10 upgrades to next-gen versions of Ghosts. Today, Activision revealed how next-gen upgrades will work on each console.

On the PlayStation 4, physical copies of Call of Duty: Ghosts for PlayStation 3 will come with a PlayStation Store code that unlocks a $10 digital download version of Ghosts for the PlayStation 4. Digital PlayStation 3 copies of Ghosts will automatically unlock the $10 PS4 offer.

For Xbox One, Ghosts will be part of Microsoft’s new “Xbox Game Ahead” program. A $70 version of Ghosts will be available as a digital download, and comes with game licenses for both the Xbox 360 and Xbox One version of the game. The licenses are linked through a single Xbox Live gamertag. Gamers who buy the $60 digital download of Ghosts on Xbox 360 will also have the chance to pick up the Xbox One version for $10, similar to Sony’s method.

Activision has also announced that all player stats and unlocks will carry over to next-gen versions of Ghosts. This is accomplished through the “Call of Duty account” system.

Other publishers have announced similar upgrade plans for their fall game lineups. EA will be offering a nearly identical upgrade path for Battlefield 4, and Ubisoft will be offering something similar for Watch Dogs and Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag. Retailers such as GameStop, Amazon, and Microsoft Stores also have their own upgrade paths for these games, but it all generally boils down to a $10 upgrade.
