  • Toronto, Canada is well-known to be one of the safest places in North America; that’s why, when shots were fired inside a mall food court over the weekend, Canadians were shocked. Brett Lawrie, third baseman for the Toronto Blue Jays, was there when it happened.

An unidentified man–who hadn’t been caught as of Sunday night–fired several shots in the food court, killing one man and wounding several others. Many additional injuries were reported when people in the crowded eatery began to run for their lives, causing a stampede. One woman went into premature labor as a result.

Lawrie, who was at the mall food court just seconds before the shots were fired, tweeted about it as it was happening.

Pretty sure someone just let off a round bullets in eaton center mall .. Wow just sprinted out of the mall … Through traffic …

Toronto is known for their surprisingly low numbers when it comes to gun-related incidents, so the weekend shooting certainly rattled people all over the country…especially since it comes on the heels of another shocking story about a porn star who allegedly murdered, dismembered, and partially ate another man, but also because it happened at such a well-known public spot as Eaton Centre mall, which draws tourists from all over.

”Any place for discharging a firearm in Toronto is dangerous. In the food court of the Eaton Centre on a Saturday evening, it’s not only dangerous, it’s outrageous,” police chief Bill Blair said. ”I believe every Torontonian is shocked and appalled by this crime.”
