  • Bill Maher, controversial stand-up comic and host of the HBO program “Real Time With Bill Maher”, admitted during a trip to Citi Field on Sunday that he had purchased a minority share of the New York Mets months ago. However, Maher wouldn’t reveal how much he paid for the share or how much control he currently has in the franchise. In fact, when asked how much control he’d have over the ball club, the political satirist replied with a joke.

“Look, I have enough stress in my real job. I don’t need to worry about that. I’m just a fan,” Maher jokingly explained. “I think my role is to bring luck to the team, like I did this weekend. I mean, let’s be honest: They did not have a no-hitter for 50 years, I buy in and I come to town and there’s a no-hitter. Draw your own conclusions.”

After the trustee was sued in order to recover money taken from victims of the Bernard Madoff Ponzi scheme, Mets owners Fred Wilpon and Saul Katz suddenly became interested in selling limited partner shares at $20 million a piece. Maher, who grew up in New Jersey, has always been a Mets fan. What’s more, he thought purchasing minority stake in his favorite baseball team sounded like a smart investment.

According to the Associated Press, the Mets have already closed on the 12 shares they had for sale. However, since a public announcement of the purchases has not been authorized, very little information about the other investors is currently known. Maher, on the other hand, is clearly excited about his purchase. The comedian paid a visit to New York Citi Field on Sunday, which marks the first time he’s been back to the city since the deal closed.

“I’ve never been back here — it’s awesome. I’ve never been by a batting cage, really,” Maher said. “”I definitely want to come back for the All-Star game.”

How do people feel about the comedian’s investment in the New York Mets? Check out some responses to the news embedded below. The level of snark found in these comments is pretty high, so prepare yourself accordingly.

Bill Maher bought a piece of the Mets because he wants to be associated with something else as unpopular as atheism.
