  • Barbara Streisand is getting back into the director’s chair for her first major project since 1996’s The Mirror Has Two Faces.

The Hollywood Reporter confirms that Streisand will direct a biopic of Catherine the Great, the longest-ruling female leader of Russia.

Catherine the Great came to power in 1762 when her husband, Peter III, was assassinated. She ruled until 1796.

According to The Wrap, the script was the winner of the 2014 Blacklist award, which is given to the best unproduced screenplay. Life of Pi producer Gil Netter is attached to the project.

Streisand has directed classic films such as 1983’s Yentl and 1991’s The Prince of Tides.

Barbara Streisand was recently honored with the country’s highest civilian honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
