  • AWS is continuing its cost-cutting measures, cracking down on managers’ authority to hire people.

In a leaked memo viewed by Fortune, AWS says its internal tool Roster will be “the source of truth for approved headcount plans,” The memo goes on to say that Roster is being rolled out as part of AWS’ Workforce Management and will help ensure “all hiring efforts and resourcing aligns to approved business demands by EOY 2023.”

The memo comes at a time when Amazon has engaged in multiple rounds of layoffs, the latest of which has hit AWS particularly hard.

Some critics have already accused the tech industry of ‘vanity hiring,’ bringing on workers that didn’t contribute to the company or do any real work. Some companies even hired so-called “penned” employees, individuals who were hired simply on the off-chance they might be useful or to prevent a person with valuable experience from being hired by a competitor.

It appears AWS is serious about not repeating the mistakes of the past.
