  • If you are no longer able to care for yourself on a daily basis or have a loved one who is struggling with the basic aspects of daily life, assisted living may be an option to consider.

Assisted living facilities allow residents to care for themselves as much as possible, but have aides on-hand to help if necessary.

All assisted living facilities are different and you should take your time when choosing the right one for yourself or a loved one.

When it comes time to move into the assisted living facility of your choice, these tips can make the transition easier.

    Downsize
Nobody wants to get rid of their belongings, but if you are moving into an assisted living facility with small rooms, you will have to get rid of some stuff. Consider having an estate sale and get rid of any large furniture pieces that you don’t need as well as any other trinkets, decorations or clothing that you feel comfortable parting with. Keep things that are important or special and anything you can use or will need at the facility.

Visit The Facility Ahead Of Time
You probably checked out the facility you plan to move into before you made the decision, but you may want to visit it a few more times before you move into it. This will help you feel more familiar with it when you do move in and can help you decide what personal items to bring with you and even how you want to decorate the room or rooms.

    Socialize Early
One of the most positive things about moving into an assisted living facility is meeting new people and making friends. It can be awkward at first, but the sooner you start socializing, the easier your transition will be. Start meeting people at your very first visit and allow others to help with the move if they offer to. Even while you are moving in you can take short breaks to walk around, introduce yourself and let others know you are new to the facility.

Giving up a life you are used to can be hard but there are many benefits of moving into an assisted living facility. Not only will you get the help you need, but also a fresh start and a chance to meet new friends.
