  • Live action trailers for big game releases have become something of the norm, popularized by classic Halo and Call of Duty trailers. This year’s Assassin’s Creed title is no exception. Back in August Ubisoft released an Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag trailer showcasing a sinking ship, pirating, and flaming sails.

Today, Ubisoft is revisiting the “Defy” live action trailer with a behind-the-scenes making-of video. The video shows how big of a production the short video actually was. The construction of the set, including a life-size section of a Spanish gunboat, took around 3 weeks. From the pyrotechnics to the choreography of the battle, the ad’s creators talk about their work and the difficulties encountered during the shoot:

Raphael Lacoste, brand art director for the Assassin’s Creed series, states in the video that this live action trailer was the “most ambitious” trailer Ubisoft has made to date. Ubisoft Motion Pictures has announced several movie projects, including an Assassin’s Creed flick starring Michael Fassbender. Splinter Cell and Watch Dogs movies are also on the way. The final cut of the Defy trailer, seen below, should give video game fans hope that some decent video game movies will be coming in the near future.
