  • Ariana Grande celebrated the dawn of 2014 during a performance in Hollywood on Tuesday night, and she also celebrates her womanhood–all 20 years of it–on the cover of Cosmopolitan’s February issue. Inside its pages she talks about being an ‘old soul’ and how ex-boyfriend Nathan Sykes from The Wanted won her over in a very old-fashioned way.

“I think I’m an old soul. What excites younger people doesn’t excite me… I’m kind of a boring, normal girl who likes Harry Potter and to sit in her pajamas and sing. A lot of my friends are partiers, but I’ve never really clicked with that. I like Barbra Streisand, and when was the last time you saw Babs getting, like, turnt up? That’s kind of the road that I, as a lady, would like to go down,” she says in her interview.

Good for Ariana! At 20 years old she should be waiting for young men to woo her romantically. There’s no reason for young women her age to be flaunting themselves in clubs or parties.

Ariana Grande is clearly way too busy to be dating anyway. Her debut album Yours Truly has kept her on the go since its release. She isn’t caught up in the self-centered aspects of stardom, however, and is mindful of her adoring fans.

She recently got in trouble at an Amsterdam airport when she was mobbed by those fans, however.

“I never want to be the person who avoids my own fans, so I always try to stop and say hi,” she says. “But it turned into a big mosh of people, and it became quite dangerous. I got sent to the police station, and they told me not to come back to that airport!”

Once tucked safely inside her hotel room, she was cautioned about going outside.

“I just went out anyway,” she says. “I said, ‘You can’t stop me!’ That’s one thing to get in trouble for: loving your fans too much.”

Despite her exciting life, Ariana admits that traveling all the time does have its drawbacks. Tuesday night found her in Hollywood, performing on Dick Clark’s Rockin’ New Years Eve special.

“I didn’t know that I was capable of going to so many places in so few days,” she says. “It’s really hard for me and my friend Alexa, because she’s in school and she doesn’t have the flexibility to come visit me on the road whenever she wants. But whenever she’s on break, I try to fly her in and keep her with me as long as I can. It’s funny; one time I tweeted her school in Gainesville, like, ‘I’m keeping Alexa!’ And they tweeted me back: ‘All right. Make sure she does her homework.'”

Hopefully this former Nickelodeon star (Ariana is known for her role as Cat Valentine in the Nick shows Victorious and Sam & Cat) stays as sweet and as old a soul as she currently is. The Hollywood life can eat a young performer alive or send them spiraling in a bad direction. It would be nice to see Ariana Grande soar to the top without changing her image or selling herself short.

In the meantime she certainly looks gorgeous on that Cosmo cover.
