  • Amazon announced that it intends to open an AWS region in Montreal this year. This will give AWS partners and customers the ability to run workloads and store data in the country for the first time.

The company currently has four other regions in North America, which include: US East (Northern Virginia), US West (Northern California), US West (Oregon), and AWS GovCloud (US). They have a total of 13 availability zones with another planned region coming to Ohio later this year.

“We continue to announce, build, and launch additional AWS regions as our customer base becomes larger, more diverse, and accustomed to running many different types of workloads in the cloud,” says Amazon’s Jeff Bar.

“As always, we are looking forward to serving new and existing Canadian customers and to working with partners in the area. Of course, the new region will also be open to existing AWS customers who would like to process and store data in Canada,” he says.

Amazon’s global infrastructure includes 32 availability zones across 12 regions throughout the world, with another 5 regions and 11 availability zones coming throughout the next year.

Last week, Amazon announced the launch of the Asia Pacific (Seoul) region, which is its fifth technology infrastructure region in Asia Pacific. This comes with the launch of Korean data centers that Korean-based businesses and global companies with Korean customers can utilize.

In addition to Ohio and Canada, regions coming this year include China, India, and the United Kingdom.
