Amanda Knox has been found guilty at an Italian retrial that took place this week. Knox and her boyfriend at the time, Raffaele Sollecito, were both accused of murdering Knox’s former roommate, Meredith Kercher in 2007. Sollecito and Knox were previously acquitted on appeal by another Italian court.

Knox was studying abroad in Perugia when the murder occurred. Knox was rooming with Kercher and two other women at the time. Kercher was found in the apartment that the women shared with her throat cut and over 40 stab wounds. Police arrested Knox, her boyfriend Sollecito and a friend of the couple, Rudy Guede.

Knox was sentenced to more than 28 years in prison for Kercher’s murder. Sollecito has already been sentenced to 25 years in prison. Sollecito lives in Italy, but was not immediately arrested. Knox listened to the verdict from her parent’s home. She said in an interview that she did not want to attend the trial and was told not to by her lawyers.

“[My lawyers] said, ‘If you go to the court, they’re going to be paying attention to you — they’re going to be looking at your face, they’re going to be trying to read your gestures, they’re not going to be listening, and that is a huge problem,’” Knox said.

If Italy’s supreme court upholds Knox’s conviction, Italian officials could request for her to be extradited. Since the United States has laws concerning double jeopardy, they may not honor the request when and if it is made. Because the case was a violent one and the U.S. often asks for extraditions from Italy, they could decide to approve the request.

Even if the United States does approve the request, Knox will still have a chance to defend herself in in a U.S. court.
