2024 Olympics Bid: Nairobi Sets Their Sights

  • Nairobi, the capital of Kenya, could be hosting the 2024 Olympics if they place a successful bid with the International Olympic Committee. If they are chosen, Nairobi will be the first-ever African city to host the games.

“Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga, speaking at the Kenya National House today, announced that the Republic of Kenya will be starting the process of pitching to host the Games of the 33rd Olympiad in 2024,” a Kenya House announcement said.

Among the other locations considering pitching a bid are Washington, D.C. and France, and there’s even been some talk of the U.S. and Canada co-hosting the 2024 games, with Buffalo and Toronto taking over twin hosting duties. The logistics of a co-host would obviously be difficult to sort out, however, and nothing has been decided yet.

“The question is, can we [introduce] an era where Olympic bids are joint bids between countries? And 2024 might be the opportunity for a Canada-U.S. bid,” Toronto politician James Pasternak said. “If you could have a Great Lakes Olympics where you are having cities on the Great Lakes that are partnering for events – that not only makes sense geographically, from a logistical point of view, but financially as well.”

Although this year’s Olympic games won’t be finished until Sunday, there is already buzz about the 2016 games, which will be held in Rio de Janeiro–the first for a South American country.
