Even as YouTube’s revenue and CPMs get debated yet again, a new way in which the company could lose money has come up.  TF1, a French television network, has sued YouTube for 100 million.

Right now, 100 million converts to about $159 million.  The suit revolves around TF1 shows being put online.  It’s not the largest threat YouTube has faced – that $1 billion Viacom suit is still hanging around – but it’s a relatively dangerous one.

The trial will take place in Paris, according to Reuters, and French authorities aren’t huge fans of Google.  The search giant has cornered a market share of 90 percent in their country, and they’ve poured all sorts of money and energy into the Quaero search project in response.

On the bright side (as far as Google’s concerned), no dates appear to have been set, so just as the Viacom lawsuit has faded into the background, TF1’s complaint might disappear for months or years.

We’ll keep an ear out for any updates, and be sure to report them here.

I agree. Altough it would still be a a rather impossible task, they would certainly be able to cleanup their mess faster.

Knowing a little bit about the French legal system, having used it several times, I would not be surprised if it takes time to reach court. Cases takes years to grind through the system. Furthermore the French courts seem to give right when we think wrong and vica-versa. Then when you reflect on their decision several years later it seems logical and evident. This could go either way and you can bet that it will not fade away.
