A deal with two in-game ad publishers allowed Yahoo to make some 400 games free for people to download and play.

Double Fusion and NeoEdge hooked up with Yahoo to get its game on, without a direct fee for players. Yahoo Games enjoys plenty of traffic but as VentureBeat suggested, little desire from those visitors to drop $20 on a game they just finished playing in its hour-long demo mode.

Yahoo opted to take that decision out of gamers’ hands. Just keep playing those fun downloadables, and we’ll monetize it like this:

Top technology providers, Double Fusion and NeoEdge, will sell and integrate pre-roll, mid-roll and post-roll video ads into the Yahoo! Games catalog. Paid downloads without advertising will also be available to users on Yahoo! Games.

For advertisers, the partnership brings the opportunity to access highly targeted reach to one of the most important consumer demographics — females 35 to 54 — at a time when they are fully engaged.

Everyone knows that in a typical household, the woman tends to hold the purse strings. Video ads in the games those decision-makers play could make Yahoo a bigger winner.
