In yet another case that showcases search engine’s double standards in conforming to government laws, Yahoo! has been sued by the wife of a Chinese writer. Yu Ling has stated that her husband "has been tortured in the Chinese prison where he is being held” on charges of "incitement to subvert state power."

Yahoo! aided in the prosecution by providing crucial information which involved forwarding emails sent by the writer. According to a report at InfoWorld, Yahoo! has issued a defensive statement which states:

We condemn punishment of any activity internationally recognized as free expression, whether that punishment takes place in China or anywhere else in the world,

The report also mentions that this is the third time in three months that Yahoo! has aided in conviction of political writers in China.

In February, Reporters Without Borders, a journalism watchdog group based in Paris, said Yahoo provided information about an e-mail address used by Li Zhi, a political activist and former government official convicted and sentenced to eight years. Police may have identified Li by using the e-mail address to find his IP address and then location,

These times most of the commodities come with helpful guidelines for the user on harmful ill effects. Search engines should also issue something of the sort stating that no information passed through them is safe.
