Update: Yahoo has issued the following statment regarding MyBlogLog’s future:

Frankly, it’s no secret within Yahoo! that we’re actively discussing the future of MyBlogLog. However, it’s also true that we have not made any final decisions at this point. Is a shutdown on the table? Sure, that’s an option. But there are other options as well. We know this creates some uncertainty for current MyBlogLog users. While we aren’t quite ready to share more details, we promise to keep you posted.

Original Article: Yahoo will reportedly shut down MyBlogLog in January. Marshall Kirkpatrick at ReadWriteWeb claims to have heard from "sources close to the project" that this is the case.

"Yahoo! has let the service atrophy for years and will now put it to rest," writes Kirkpatrick. "To think that this service offered publishers and developers access to personal, demographic, taste and activity data of a website’s readers – and yet that offering has in the end gone no where – that’s downright crazy."

MyBlogLog was originally developed by Cloudspace out of Florida, but was acquired by Yahoo in January 2007. The company paid over 10 million dollars for it. According to Wikipedia, there were over 45,000 blogs subscribed to it at the time, and it currently has 275,000 registered users.

It’s no secret that Yahoo is cutting costs wherever it can. For example, earlier this year, they shut down the once popular Geocities. Just this week, they announced that they would be closing their offices for a whole week to save a little dough.

No mention of the demise of the service is mentioned on the MyBlogLog blog.

Right on! Yahoo is going out of business. All my contacts at Yahoo tell me that the company is totally screwed and nobody even knows what is going on.

They say everyone nods in agreement when Carol is present, but shake their head in confusion and disgust when she leaves b/c there is no direction in the company other than slash and burn.

Hey!!!! You removed that great, long post from the X-Yahoo employee.

    What gives? That sucks!!!!

Damn Yahoo managers. Try to stop my favorite service.

This has been a really useful service, and you’d think they could monetize it like crazy, given what it does. This is a perfect example of corporate idiocy. Spend the dough on a great idea and then just trash it.

I’m sure if they put it up for sale Google would have bid on it. :-)

Surely it can not be that bad?

I found Yahoo Briefcase the perfect solution to my online storage needs for important files and my resume etc it was actually the only place that I had important files backed up but they shut that down and I wasnt aware of it until I needed a file they say they informed people of the impending end but I received no notification anywhere so I lost items that cant be replaced thanks a lot I will continue using google and gmail but I dont like them much either every page you goto you can see google ad junk being loaded nothing is private anymore and this should be a right of online users frankly I dont see how it is anyones business as to what I am searching for “target nothing” I can find it myself if I want it I will never buy from an ad anyway.

Man, I wish I’d never started PAYING for FLICKR. I KNOW I’m FUCKED NOW. Guess I’ll migrate what I have to some other photo service and wait for FLICKR to go the way of GeoCities.

I just hope eBay goes the way of Yahoo, since like Yahoo, eBay sucks ass just ever bit as much as Yahoo.

Soon, Yahoo will just kill off it’s USERS and not just it’s internet services.

I can’t stand ebay anymore either! Ebay has become a wholesaler community only. Now Ebay relies on its wholesalers and raise their prices. It is impossible to sell anything anymore yet alone buy anything that may or may not show up at your door looking cheap! I also agree if Yahoo keeps closing shop on the services they open they will lose their popularity.

I just wondering what’s in Yahoo! head?
They just killed a community, Geocities and now MyBlogLog?
I think people will leaving Yahoo! for good if they continue doing such a things.

I love using bloglog and I have noticed so many other advertisers as well as people wanting to share do too! Why is yahoo always shutting down communities that seem to be going well? Yahoo is popular but if they keep shutting down communities right and left, they may start losing the popularity. Please Yahoo, not this one too! :)
