The existing alerts service from Yahoo will gain the capability to add RSS feeds and send alerts when those feeds get updated.

Users of Yahoo’s Alerts service can receive notifications of updated feeds via email, SMS, or instant messenger, as the portal company tweaks the service today to allow adding RSS feeds, CNet reported.

Currently, users can select from a list of available alerts on the Alerts site or from places on the Yahoo web site, like news, where the ‘ringing bell’ icon appears. Opening the alerts to RSS feeds lets users setup alerts for updates to blogs and other content sites.

Testers of the new Yahoo Mail beta will see My Yahoo RSS feed subscriptions integrated into the mail client, the report said. Yahoo also plans to make a subscription button available for feed publishers that will let users add those feeds to their Yahoo services.

Yahoo’s large user base of over 160 million registered users could do for RSS feeds what Apple did for podcasting. By incorporating feeds into more of its services, Yahoo may be able to take RSS to more of the mainstream audience.
