The first 802.16-2004 compliant WiMAX trial in the UK is being conducted by PIPEX Communications and Airspan Networks.

The trial, which will be conducted in the UK’s Midlands region, will be used to evaluate the delivery of broadband services using PIPEX’s WiMAX spectrum and Airspan’s WiMAX products.

“WiMAX is an exciting new opportunity for PIPEX and this test will help determine how we offer wireless broadband services to our customers using our licensed spectrum,” Mike Read, PIPEX’s CEO, said.

“Combined voice and data offerings using WiMAX will enable PIPEX to deliver differentiated products in addition to our existing services,” added Read. “We are pleased to be working with Airspan, as they are one of the world’s leading broadband wireless companies and their products which will help us evaluate the full potential of WiMAX.”

Included in the trial, will be an assessment of the end-user acceptability of wireless broadband data and voice services, as well as an assessment of long-term stability and availability of WIMAX according to the two companies.

Future phases of the trial will assess performance of other WiMAX CPE types, such as laptop cards and handheld devices for both fixed and nomadic applications.
