What would you do if Facebook was no more? Tweet more? I bet Google+ would open up invites even more in the event of a total Facebook collapse.

We all might be faced with that reality, says hacktivist group Anonymous. They have begun #OpFacebook, a specifc AnonOps that has this stated goal:

Your medium of communication you all so dearly adore will be destroyed

Anonymous, who have tackled various organizations from Sony to the leadership in Syria, is now apparently setting their sights on the world’s largest social network. Why are they doing this? It’s all about privacy and information they say –

Facebook has been selling information to government agencies and giving clandestine access to information security firms so that they can spy on people from all around the world. Some of these so-called whitehat infosec firms are working for authoritarian governments, such as those of Egypt and Syria.

Everything you do on Facebook stays on Facebook regardless of your “privacy” settings, and deleting your account is impossible, even if you “delete” your account, all your personal info stays on Facebook and can be recovered at any time. Changing the privacy settings to make your Facebook account more “private” is also a delusion.

The takedown is scheduled for November 5th, a date with a bit of significance tied to it (Guy Fawkes night – indulge yourself)

“Facebook is the opposite of the antisec cause,” they say. An Anonymous Twitter account, @OP_Facebook, has been set up with the bio reading “Lulz Boat.” The only tweet so far is a link to this YouTube video –

A quick Twitter search for the hashtag #OpFacebook gives you a steady stream new tweets. The top tweet for the tag is from one of the Anonymous accounts, @GroupAnon. They make it known that not everyone within Anonymous is behind the scheduled takedown –

FYI – #OpFacebook is being organised by some Anons. This does not necessarily mean that all of #Anonymous agrees with it. | #AnonOps 7 hours ago via web · powered by @socialditto

Could Anonymous really destroy Facebook? I guess we will just have to wait and see.

Anonymous has no power at all, they haven’t had any in YEARS. The fact that anyone thinks they can still do anything is pathetic. It’s all full of summer fags who couldn’t DDoS twitter, which is always overcapacity as it is. FaceBook is too powerful for even google to take over.

Good luck Anon. Maybe one day you kids will all stop acting 12 and realize none of you have any power at all.

and they know what’s good for us becaaauuse…? they were obviously negelcted as a child & now feel the need to care of us, i think somebody needs a huuuuugg ^_^

just because they don’t have a life other than sitting in front of a f###ing computer figuring out other ways to screw with everybody else’s online life doesn’t mean they need to ‘take down’ something most of us like to use to KIT with friends, family, or whatever.

somebody tell these homos to get a girlfriend (or at least a life). i can’t wait to see them fail so they can STFU already. Lulsec knew they proved their point & quit, now Anon is just getting to be obnoxious.

Okay, assuming they take it down, how long will it stay down? I file this in the category of “who cares?”.

I have no doubt they can cause quite a bit of damage to Facebook, just as they have done to Sony. But like Sony, Facebook should be able to weather out the storm and still retain their dominance.

One thing is clear that there is competition between G vs F. Even if its about privacy issues, G and FB are the same, so it does’nt matters at all. Its users choice after all.

G+ is growing at a speedy rate only because it automatically transfers all your Gmail contacts to G+

On the other hand Facebook is a more popular and preferred platform with the number of activities and entertainment options it provides.

I personally think G+ is great platform but Facebook will rule i terms of engagement levels & on the popularity score..

It’s hard to to decide how much of Anonymous’ claims about Facebook to take seriously. The thing about social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter is that they do contain astounding amounts of personal information, and once you become a person of interest, it would be easy to find data on you in any of these two sites. It comes as no surprise, therefore, that governments, particularly authoritarian ones, will take interest.

If it does happen, there are other social networks like Google+, Twitter, and Fandustry that should fill the void.

I think Facebook should fire back with a $10 million dollar reward to anybody who helps in the capture of the members of Anonymous who have attacked Facebook on November 5th if this event occurs.

Regardless of Facebook’s practices, it’s the public that is allowing them this information. It’s not like Facebook held a gun to anybody’s head to use their website. Basically we all know by now if you don’t want your information given to the public, don’t give it to a social networking website.

To be honest, I don’t know if something the size of Facebook can be taken down. I mean what’s next, is Anonymous going to go after Google and shut down their search engine for a few hours or even a day?

Also, according to Anonymous members, only like 10% of their group really knows how to hack, the rest basically know how to ftp or email their information. Big deal. That’s like 1 guy knowing how to grow marijuana, and the rest sneaking it across the border.
