Wikipedia Gives Its Mobile Site New Type, Layout
This includes a navigational update to help with content exploration and a typographical update to help with readability.
“The new navigation system is designed to make mobile features and settings more discoverable, paving the way for the addition of new features. In the coming months, the mobile team will continue to experiment with and build contributory features. Whether it’s uploading a photo (as with the Wiki Loves Monuments Android app), watching changes to articles, or even editing, we want anyone to be able to pitch in and help make Wikipedia even better,” says Associate Product Manager Maryana Pinchuk.
Tapping the three lines next to the search bar on the home page reveals your settings and the ability to go to a random article. You’ll also notice that the categories look a bit different after a search, allowing users to reveal and retract with a single click.
Wikipedia is really excited about the typography changes, which brings news fonts which they say offer “improved device compatibility, ease of scannability and reading, and, more generally, to better fit the high quality standards to which all Wikimedia projects strive.” Wikipedia says that fonts have been shown to influence a readers perception and comprehension of information. They also say that this is not the end of the typography updates.
With this update, Wikipedia says they closer to reaching their goal of 4 billion pageviews a month by June 2013.
