Back a few months ago when I asked How to revamp Yahoo! Groups?, I got a ton of great comments.

Many folks suggested that we provide an API. And now that I’m part of the Yahoo! Developer Network, I’d like to dig into that request a bit deeper.

What would you like to see in a Yahoo! Groups API? How would you [like to] use it?

Also, if you’re not currently a Yahoo! Groups user, please note that in your response.

i think it would be better if the API will provide functionalities to integrate the yahoo groups into other website. This is to allow external web applications to query mesages and return either xml or jason format. Not only to query but also to post messages, manage users and query other information such as user list, messages stat, photos etc…

I am not a user of Yahoo Groups – I currently use GoogleGroups, who are having similar discussions about an API. I would like:

    • The ability to create and manipulate group settings programmatically
    • The ability to create and manipulate memberships programmatically
    • The ability to feed content as XML to third party sites (perhaps supported already)
    • The ability to tag posts so that filtered feeds can be requested
    • The ability to subscribe/unsubscribe users to multiple groups, with a single api call generating a single confirmation email. I have never understood why mailing lists solutions are usually list (rather than member) oriented.
    • The ability to create networks of group, inheriting each others members and settings

    I hope this is helpful.
