What topics are being looked for by Americans when they search? A recent study from Harris Interactive gives some insight into this subject.

Chris Sherman of SearchEngineWatch provided a thorough look at the results of the Harris study, which polled over 2000 American adults. Some of the highlights include:

88% of the men who were polled indicated they searched for specific topics related to a hobby or interest; whereas, 61% of women are searching for something related to health and medicine. Only 28% are using search for career purposes, which, like Sherman says, it quite surprising.

Other results:

  • Getting directions/maps – 75%
  • Looking for news – 64%
  • Shopping – 51%
  • Looking for entertainment web sites – 47%
  • The study also confirmed Google as being the top search followed by the rest of the big three (Yahoo and MSN, in that order). The Harris study was commissioned by icrossing whose CEO, Jeffrey Herzog, offers these comments:

“The more we understand about how consumers are searching, what they’re looking for, and what their needs are, the better we can help marketers serve them. This report represents one more way for us to educate and inform the industry, just as we’ve been doing since 1998.”
