Next summer we will see one of Disney's most iconic villains get an origin story. Disney's Maleficent will follow a you woman whose heart is eventually turned into stone. If that name isn't ringing any bells for you, she was the with from the 1959 animated classic, Sleeping Beauty. You can see a trailer for the film above.
Maleficent is directed by Robert Stromberg, the Oscar-winning visual-effects artist behind Avatar and Alice in Wonderland. The film was also written by by Linda Woolverton, the Disney veteran who brought us The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, and Alice in Wonderland. Maleficent rises to be the land's fiercest protector, but she ultimately suffers a ruthless betrayal -- an act that begins to turn her pure heart to stone. Bent on revenge, Maleficent faces an epic battle with the invading king's successor and, as a result, places a curse upon his newborn infant Aurora. As the child grows, Maleficent realizes that Aurora holds the key to peace in the kingdom -- and perhaps to Maleficent's true happiness as well."
