Earlier this year, it was discovered that YouTube was including an option to download on some of its videos. A small "click to download" link appeared underneath these videos. One example was seen on President Obama’s weekly address:

Alex Chitu at the Google Operating System Blog made another interesting discovery. Your "My Videos" section has a place for "purchased videos" and the YouTube Help Center tells about purchasing them.

To download, simply click the aforementioned link. If you have to pay for it, you’ll be directed to Google Checkout where you can make your purchase.

This is an interesting move for YouTube, further pushing its monetization model. Now you can count iTunes and Amazon among its competitors. YouTube is certainly only in the early stages of this part of the industry, but I’d look for a lot of progress there in the near future.

Not all videos are available to download. It only applies to some of YouTube’s partners that have made some kind of deal. Downloads are only available in mp4 format.
